Fall of Kabul: During a military effort against the Afghan government that began in May 2021, Taliban militants on 15 August 2021 took control of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital city. President Ashraf Ghani had fled the country when Kabul was captured. In the midst of a US army retreat, most of Afghanistan’s provincial capitals have fallen in sequence, according to a February 2020 US–Taliban agreement that ended on August 30, 2021. Although US intelligence assessments as recently as July predicted that Kabul would fall within months or weeks of US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, the security situation quickly deteriorated, prompting US President Joe Biden to admit on August 16 that “this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated.”

The US and its coalition partners evacuated more than 123,000 people from Afghanistan via airlifts from the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul between 14 August and 31 August 2021 (when the US military completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan). The US military and its NATO partners provided security for the airport and airfield. Foreign diplomats and military people, foreign citizens, Afghan allies, and vulnerable Afghans like as journalists and human rights activists were among those evacuated. Over the course of the 18-day campaign, US military soldiers took 79,000 civilians through the airport and out of Afghanistan, making it the greatest non-combatant evacuation mission in US military history. Approximately 6,000 Americans were among those evacuated.

Around a thousand U.S. citizens and Afghans with U.S. or other visas were left stranded by the Taliban after the US pullout. It was “several thousand” US residents and one hundred US citizens, Blinken revealed two weeks later.
